This post title is a quote from Winston Churchill and I thought it suited nicely. I just read that a St. Louis high school teacher has been placed on paid administrative leave for the rest of the school year after telling the school administrators that she used to be a adult film star. The Parkway School District issued a statement that said the teacher told her school principal about her past after a student confronted her about it.
Although the district declined to indentify the teacher, The St. Louis Post Dispatch found out who the teacher is and revealed that in 2006 despite support for the teacher from parents and teachers, she had been fired from a teaching job in Kentucky for the same reason. That same year she went on the Dr. Phil Show and told her story.
Now I’m not going to go into detail about what caused this teacher to live her life as a porn star over 15 years ago. She had her reasons, but she cleaned up her life, went to school and graduated and then got a respectable job. She is no longer the person she was at 22. I don’t think it’s right for a teacher to lose her job for something that was not illegal and she no longer participates in. Everyone makes mistakes and should be given a second chance.
What do you think? Would you want her to teach your child or do you think both school districts made the right call?
A teacher’s purpose is not to create students in his own image, but to develop students who can create their own image. ~Author Unknown
